Chapter Three — The Hill of Almost Dark

Emma and the Lantern of Small Wishes

Emma was not afraid of the dark. She was only afraid of the moment just before it, when the sky forgot which colour it wanted to be.

“Hold the lantern lower,” whispered the wind, who had been waiting all evening for someone brave enough to listen. “Small lights travel further than you think.”

So Emma held it lower, and one by one the stars leaned down to see what she had made — a little boat of paper, carrying one very large wish.
